Thank you to the Clintonville Women’s Club for hosting the First Clintonville Community Chili Cook off! It was a nice time to meet neighbors and learn about organizations and non profits working in our neighborhood!!! The CAC silvery sign for “Out of this World Chili” was designed by kids in after school care !! Thank you Khara Nemitz for arranging!

!

Here is our recipe for “Maple Bacon Chili” that Libby & Judy prepared- it was a nice combination of sweet and spicy!!

4lbs lean (at least 80%-90%) ground beef
8 medium onions and 4 medium green peppers chopped (about 6 cups)
4 cans (28 oz each) diced tomatoes, undrained
3 cans (19 oz each) red kidney beans, drained, liquid reserved
1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce
3 tablespoons chili powder
4 tablespoons brown sugar
1 tablespoon salt
2 lbs center cut bacon
1/2 cup maple syrup
In 8-quart Dutch oven or stockpot, combine and cook beef and onions, green peppers over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until beef is thoroughly cooked and onions are tender; drain. Fry 2 lbs center cut bacon- sprinkle with brown sugar prior to the last stir. Add to the ground beef mixture-Stir in tomatoes, bean liquid, tomato sauce, chili powder, brown sugar, and salt, breaking up tomatoes. Heat to boiling; reduce heat. Simmer uncovered 1 hours. Stir in 1/2 cup maple syrup & red kidney beans and simmer 15 minutes.

Snow, snow, snow!

City of Columbus Winter Update

The City of Columbus Snow Warriors will be monitoring weather conditions throughout the day Friday and taking any opportunities to anti-ice, if possible, in preparation for potential snow and ice accumulation.

As the temperatures begin to fall and the precipitation turns from rain to possible ice/snow, the DPS Division of Infrastructure Management will begin treating roadways in order to reduce ice from bonding to the pavement. Snow Warriors will be staged in strategic locations as to reduce travel times to locations such as State Routes 315, 104, 161 and U.S. 33.

Necessary staffing will be maintained throughout the event as the Snow Warriors transition into the Priority 1 roadways Friday evening. Currently, the Division of Infrastructure Management has about 79 Snow fleet vehicles available, approximately 21,000 tons of salt, and more than 100,000 gallons of liquid anti/de-icing agents on hand.

Some tips for motorists:

Don’t crowd the plow.
Plow drivers have limited visibility so don’t assume your vehicle is in view.

Maintain a safe distance behind the snowplow.
Plows aren’t just removing snow. They may also be spreading granular or liquid material.

Slow down.
Plows are large and move slower than highway speeds. It is difficult to judge distance when approaching the plow so slow down immediately to avoid a collision.

As the snow falls, be sure to go to warriorwatch.columbus.gov to see what city streets have been serviced in the past 72 hours and to check the priority level of your street.
