Snow, snow, snow!

City of Columbus Winter Update

The City of Columbus Snow Warriors will be monitoring weather conditions throughout the day Friday and taking any opportunities to anti-ice, if possible, in preparation for potential snow and ice accumulation.

As the temperatures begin to fall and the precipitation turns from rain to possible ice/snow, the DPS Division of Infrastructure Management will begin treating roadways in order to reduce ice from bonding to the pavement. Snow Warriors will be staged in strategic locations as to reduce travel times to locations such as State Routes 315, 104, 161 and U.S. 33.

Necessary staffing will be maintained throughout the event as the Snow Warriors transition into the Priority 1 roadways Friday evening. Currently, the Division of Infrastructure Management has about 79 Snow fleet vehicles available, approximately 21,000 tons of salt, and more than 100,000 gallons of liquid anti/de-icing agents on hand.

Some tips for motorists:

Don’t crowd the plow.
Plow drivers have limited visibility so don’t assume your vehicle is in view.

Maintain a safe distance behind the snowplow.
Plows aren’t just removing snow. They may also be spreading granular or liquid material.

Slow down.
Plows are large and move slower than highway speeds. It is difficult to judge distance when approaching the plow so slow down immediately to avoid a collision.

As the snow falls, be sure to go to warriorwatch.columbus.gov to see what city streets have been serviced in the past 72 hours and to check the priority level of your street.
