Vector Control- West Nile Virus

We received this information from the Environmental Health Division today:

There were two separate positive mosquito pools for West Nile Virus collected from traps near Morse Road and also Webster Park Avenue recently. Both tests were confirmed last Friday, July 28th, by our staff.  Due to these positive West Nile Virus mosquito pools, our Vector Control Program will be spraying in Clintonville on Friday, August 4th  from 3:30 am-6:30 am.

The boundaries for the first spraying are as follows:

Croswell Road to the North

North Broadway to the South

High Street to the East

SR 315 and the Olentangy River to the West

The boundaries for this second spraying are as follows:

Charleston Ave. to the North

Beaumont Road to the South

Colerain Ave. to the East

High Street to the West

A press release and spray map was issued Tuesday, August 1st  At this moment all requests to opt out of mosquito spraying will be honored that have already been filed.

The positive West Nile Virus pools do serve as a reminder for us to continue protecting ourselves from mosquito bites and to eliminate stagnant water from our properties including places such as gutters, rain barrels, and bird baths. One can also protect themselves from mosquito bites by using insect repellents and by minimizing their time spent outside during the late evening and early morning hours. Please let Ryan Younge, RS, the Vector Control Program Manager, know if you would like to discuss in further detail our mosquito reduction activities planned in Clintonville this week. His e-mail address is rtyounge@columbus.gov and his phone number is 614.645.6153.

August 3 Meeting Location Changed

It is necessary to change the venue for our August meeting due to concerns about a large crowd.  The meeting will be held at Clintonville Woman’s Club which is just north of the library at 3951 N. High Street.  There is good parking there as well as at the rec center parking lot.  Signs will be posted at the library to notify people, but the commission would appreciate people spreading the word.

The meeting time remains the same:  7 pm

SWACO Clarification

SWACO’s official “announcement”  and details of additional recycling container’s becoming available will be made formal within the next week. At that time 311 operators will have up to date information and the refuse department will have full notification as well.

Brief Overview of July 6th, 2017 CAC meeting notes

Here is a brief update of the July CAC meeting:

A SWACO representative did a presentation with an overview of the program. SWACO is looking for a new drop off location close to Clintonville since the location adjacent to the Weilands parking lot has been removed. They have a possibility near Morse and Indianola- TBD. Illegal dumping has been an increasing problem. Therefore all Columbus School drop off locations are now for school use only.

Indianola Road Diet- Matt Lorenz from the city of Columbus was there to field questions. The project which started with a UIRF grant will be coupled with city funds to resurface all of Indianola from Oakland Park to Morse, including replacement of any damaged curbs and any damaged storm sewer entry points. The sidewalk phase from Garden to Morse Rd will not begin until 2019.

Ohio Health- Quite a huge project- beginning in September. We will be left with two exits from 315 N to WNB and a couple more traffic lights to get home. Many commission & public questions about access to the river from the west and possible Olentangy trail partial relocation, bridge etc, This was is not part of the existing plan, cost constraints were sited

Cranbook neighbors- Neighbors from Cranbrook attended the meeting to ask for UIRF support for rebuilding a bridge that connects the two parts of their neighborhood. We voted to support them.

Our long time city liaison Isom Nivens is retiring. Isom was a rock to our group ever attentive to concerns and quick to provide guidance and advice to us all. He will be missed.

If any neighbors have interest in volunteering to serve on a CAC subcommittee please send a letter of interest and a resume. Committees are: Election, Planning & Development, Historic Buildings, Zoning & Variance, Technology & PR.
